Born to American contractor father J W Bullock and German opera singer mother Helga Meyer, she graduated from the East Carolina University. After a brief stint in Independent films, she acted in a lead role in television production Bionic Showdown: The Six-Million-Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman in 1989.
Coming to Hollywood, Sandra Bullock took a role in the 1992 film Love Potion No. 9. The following year she managed to get roles in three films, notable of which was Demolition Man. 1994 was the turning point in her career as she won the Saturn Award as Best Actress for blockbuster Crash.
